International Baccalaureate

Upper Elementary students in Grades 6 to 8 pursue their studies through the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP). Wheatley became an authorized IB World School in 2010 and has successfully achieved re-accreditation ever since.

The IB MYP provides a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world, fostering global awareness, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning.

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP)

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is founded on the belief that education can build understanding among young people across cultures, equipping future generations to live more peacefully and productively in an interconnected world. At the heart of the MYP is intercultural awareness, helping students appreciate diversity while developing a strong sense of global citizenship.

The MYP is designed with the student at the center, carefully aligned to their stage of growth and development. This period—spanning the transition from early puberty to mid-adolescence—is a critical time of personal, social, and intellectual growth. The program supports students as they explore their identities, strengthen their independence, and build the skills needed to think critically, act responsibly, and engage meaningfully with the world around them.

The IB Learner Profile

At this stage of development, students need a program that balances discipline, skill-building, and high standards with opportunities for creativity and flexibility. Equally important is the cultivation of a personal value system to help guide their choices and actions. Through the IB Learner Profile, the MYP strives to develop young people who are principled, compassionate, and engaged members of both their local communities and the wider world.

The MYP Model

Knowledge is presented as an integrated whole. Students learn and develop and skills through a careful study of eight disciplines:

  • Language and literature
  • Language acquisition
  • Individuals and societies
  • Sciences
  • Mathematics
  • Arts: Drama, Music, Visual Arts
  • Physical and health education
  • Design

The interrelatedness of subjects is highlighted but at the same time, the programme recognizes the importance of respecting the integrity of each discipline.

Using global contexts, MYP students develop an understanding of their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet through developmentally appropriate explorations of:

  • Identities and relationships
  • Personal and cultural identity
  • Orientations in space and time
  • Scientific and technical innovation
  • Fairness and development
  • Globalization and sustainability

These global contexts are designed to make students increasingly aware of the authentic connections between the subject content and the real world. They are intended to help students develop an understanding of broader and more complex global issues.

Approaches to Learning Skills

A unifying thread across all MYP subject groups, Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills form the foundation for independent learning. They encourage students to apply their knowledge and skills in new and unfamiliar contexts. By developing and practicing these skills, students learn not just what to learn, but how to learn.

ATL skill areas include:

  • Thinking: fostering critical, creative, and reflective thought
  • Social: building collaboration, empathy, and respect in group settings
  • Communication: expressing ideas clearly and listening with understanding
  • Self-Management: developing organization, resilience, and responsibility for one’s learning
  • Research: gathering, evaluating, and using information effectively

Action and Service

Action and service are central values of the IB community. Students take action when they extend their learning beyond the classroom, applying knowledge in meaningful and practical ways. IB learners are encouraged to be caring members of their communities, committed to making a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around them.
