Areas of Study

Core Subjects

Language, mathematics, history, geography, and science form the foundation of our program. While following Ministry of Education guidelines, we go beyond them, emphasizing the interrelatedness of subjects. Through studying cultures, students develop intercultural awareness and an appreciation of universal values. Strong communication skills are also stressed, as mastery of language is essential for clear expression of ideas, attitudes, and feelings. Our program is unique in that it prepares our students for success using Ontario curriculum expectations, while using International Baccalaureate methodologies providing an academically rich, robust, and challenging environment while still considering the needs of each individual student.

Science

  • Students learn scientific concepts through hands-on exploration and discovery. Scientific thought and methodologies are integrated through the curriculum, with careful extension to contemporary issues that extend beyond the classroom in real-life contexts. Wheatley holds an annual science fair, allowing for the creative exploration of topics/ideas students are passionate about.

Individuals and Societies (Formally History and Geography)

  • Students learn how the actions of the past inform our present in an inquiry based environment. Analysis, role-play, and project based learning allow students to fully engage with our past. Physical, political and human geographies are explored and connections are drawn among these seemingly unrelated perspectives.

Mathematics

  • Students engage with a rigorous program that emphasizes mastery of basics through daily instruction. Solving familiar problems in unfamiliar situations is emphasized, which builds problem solving skills and confidence.

Interdisciplinary Studies

  • A few times each year, students explore how subjects are connected and interrelate among each other. Project-based learning draws from several subjects allowing for authentic problem-based exploration of rich topics/ideas.

Language

  • Students experience a robust Language program through diverse sources that explore local and global ideas/themes. Mechanics and style are taught in myriad ways, and units of study include novel investigation, poetry, and public speaking.

French

  • Students learn to listen, read, write, and speak French through diverse resources including texts, workbooks, media, and software.

Music

  • Weekly classes introduce the joy of music as both art and community. Students gain technical skills, cultural and historical knowledge, and opportunities to express themselves through performance.
  • Instrumental and Royal Conservatory program beginning in Grade 5

Art

  • Hands-on projects with a variety of materials help students explore creativity while building artistic ability over time.

Drama

  • Through story theatre, choral speaking, and role play, students build self-expression, communication skills, and confidence.

Physical Education

  • Child-centered classes develop fitness, health knowledge, and social skills, while extracurricular teams foster competition, sportsmanship, and teamwork.

Design (formerly Technology)

  • Developmentally appropriate use of technology is used, integrating digital tools and up-to-date programs into learning. Students develop fluency and confidence in technology use. Elements of Design are used in digital and real-life products balancing digital and real world applications/creations.

Outdoor Education

  • While not a formal class, Outdoor Education is a hallmark of the Wheatley experience. Conservation and outdoor learning come alive through experiential field activities, including fall and winter overnight excursions.
